A classic Tom Tonks long-throw gets the Lambs a goal in their FA Cup game against Huddersfield Town last season.

Last Time At The New Lawn

When the Lambs were last in Nailsworth, on Easter Monday this year, Rovers managed a comfortable 3-0 victory, with first-half goals from  Jordon Garrick, Charlie McCann and Jamie Robson.

Rovers Connections

Haydn Hollis

Defender Haydn Hollis, who joined Tamworth last year, played 20 matches in a Rovers kit in the second half of the 2017/18 season (the club’s first in League Two), scoring two goals during that time.

How are they doing?

The Lambs were the breakaway boys among the newly promoted outfits last season, finishing 10th in the National League with 17 wins and 64 points — just four points off the play-offs. The other promoted sides ended up clustered lower down the table, occupying the 17th to 19th spots. Tamworth engaged in some promising transfer activity over the summer, with arrivals including centre-back Joe Rye (on loan from Barnet), right-winger Tyler Roberts from AFC Fylde, midfielders Joe Riley from AFC Fylde, Alfie Bates from Brackley Town, Stefan Mols from Curzon Ashton, Harvey Sayer from Lowestoft Town, Reuben Wyatt from Northampton Town, and centre-forward Manny Duku from Solihull Moors. Still being a part-time outfit, Tamworth will be lucky to be challenging for the highest places in the table, but will be keen to return a similar performance to that of last season – and legendary long-throw man Tommy Tonks is still in town.

The Lambs have made a pretty decent start to the season, and have spent brief periods in the play-off places, but currently sit outside them, in 11th place. Of their seven wins in the League to date, though, only one (against lowly Truro City) has been by a margin of more than one goal.  The low points to date have been a 4-0 walloping by York City and a 3-1 defeat by Boston Utd.

The Club

Tamworth FC have enjoyed a strong few years. In 2022/23, they won the Southern League Premier Division Central on goal difference, and followed it up with another promotion in 2023/24 by securing the National League North title with two games to spare. Last season, they capped a solid return to the fifth tier with a respectable 10th-place finish, and a memorable FA Cup run that saw them defeat league opposition in Huddersfield Town and Burton Albion before being comfortably dispatched by Tottenham Hotspur in the third round.

Though they remain a part-time side—unusual at this level—the Lambs are no strangers to the National League, having previously spent time in the fifth tier between 2003 and 2007, and again from 2009 to 2014. The club, founded in 1933, has never reached Football League status. They’ve played at The Lamb Ground since 1934, named after a nearby pub that no longer exists.

Mark Cooper—yes, that Mark Cooper—had his first managerial role at Tamworth, in charge from April 2004 to January 2007. He was dismissed during a difficult campaign, which ultimately ended in relegation. Possibly the club’s most high-profile signing was Paul Merson, who briefly joined in 2006 after being sacked as Walsall manager. However, he made just a single appearance in a Tamworth shirt.

Current manager, Andy Peaks, has been in charge since 2022.

Paul Merson

Paul Merson was Tamworth’s most high-profile signing in 2006, after his dismissal as manager of Walsall.  However, he only played one game for the Lambs.
