FGR play their first home game of the season when they host Torquay United Women on Sunday. Kick off is 2pm at Hartpury. Entry is free.

Last Time Our For Rovers

FGR secured three points on the road in front of a bumper crowd as they overcame Bristol Rovers in a 2-1 victory. Goals from Charlie Rowlands either side of half time ensure FGR returned home with all three points, but not before the Gas Girls had equalised through Zoe Fielden-Stewart.

It was a performance as notable for the disciplined defending as Sam Morris put in a commanding display, whilst Holly Hughes playing at full back demonstrated a good turn of pace to nullify potential counter attacks. In goal Caitlin Leach put in a strong debut performance as FGR limited Bristol Rovers in front of goal.

Newcomers Amy Leask and Katie Jones impressed, whilst Poppy Mortimer also put in a good performance and showed her versatility in a number of roles. Estelle Randall showed why there was plenty of excitement around the ground as she came on as she put in a lively showing up front.

However it was the old guard who were involved in both goals. The effervescent Zoe Boyd supplying Rowlands with a delightful cross for the first before some good passing from FGR allowed Hattie Jones to spot an opening and play a through ball to Boyd, whose effort was saved, before Rowlands raced in to tuck the rebound away. Rowlands second brace in as many games moving her top of the scoring chart in the league.

The Opposition

Torquay finished last season in 4th, one place and eight points ahead of FGR. They also lifted the Devon Premier Womens Cup in 2022. They caused an upset by beating Exeter City Women, who play a league higher, in the final . Goalkeeper Sasha Mole was the hero as the game went to penalties, scoring one penalty and then making a decisive save to lift the trophy.

The Gulls, who play in their famous yellow shirt and blue shorts, are managed by Steve Elswood who replaced Grant Fisher who was in charge the last time the two sides met. Elswood was part of the coaching staff last season and will be well aware of the talented Torquay squad at his disposal.

Torquay registered their first win of the season at the second time of asking as they beat Poole Town 5-2. It followed an opening day 3-0 defeat to Sherborne Town, in a match more equal than the score line suggests.

Torquay’s 5-2 victory was no surprise given the strength of the squad. Their top scorer from last season Ellie Bishop was back on the scoresheet and also registered an assist. FGR will also need to be wary of Torquay’s young player of the year, and defender, Ocean Latto’s dead ball deliveries as Torquay scored from two corners last time out.

The Main Threats

As we have already mentioned Ellie Bishop is a threat and is known for being clinical in front of goal as well as being happy to turn provider with assists, whilst Latto will be keen to make the most of dead ball situations.

Elsewhere long serving Danni Wyatt is a threat in attack and is on course to reach 100 games for The Gulls this season. In defence Jana Richards will be hoping to keep FGR at bay as she captains the side.
