Match Preview – FGR Women travel to Torquay United Women FC (2pm – 06/02/22)
FGR head out on the road for the third week running as they travel away to Torquay United Women FC. FGR head into the match unbeaten in 2022 and having taken 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss from their previous 7 matches. A tough test in Torquay is another good chance to challenge themselves.
Last Time Out For FGR
FGR recorded a 1-1 draw away to Middlezoy Rovers Ladies FC in a hard-fought draw, with FGR again hit by injuries and illness meaning they took a young squad of just 11 players to Westonzoyland Airfield. The young players were unfazed and put in a performance to be proud of with some making their debuts. The more experienced players also led the team well, offering plenty of advice and encouragement.
The Opposition
Torquay United currently sit 3rd in the table having had a strong season in which they have only lost once; to Sherborne Town back in November. Alongside this they have also just reached the Devon Premier Cup final where they will be looking to cause an upset to secure the title when they face Exeter City Women. It will be the second time Torquay have appeared in the final.
Managed by Grant Fisher the club play most games at the The Speedwell Stadium, Stoke Gabriel FC, although they have sometimes changed venue to avoid games being called off over the winter when needed. The Gulls play in the clubs famous yellow and blue kit.
Ones To Watch
Bethany Everson has been a mainstay for Torquay with 16 appearances, scoring 7 times. Top scorer Ellie Bishop has 14 goals from 14 games and will be the main threat. Whilst recent signings Katie Barribal, Alex Sheppard and Esme Kilburn-Thompson will be hoping to make an impact. Scarlett McMahon was recently called up to the Wales U17 squad but is unlikely to feature.
Last Meeting Between The Two Sides
The two sides last met in September with the game finishing 2-2. Goals for FGR came from Hattie Jones and Ella Hitchcox whilst Torquay scored through Ellie Bishop and Ocean Latto.
Did you know?
Both Torquay United’s Men’s and Women’s teams play in the 5th tier of their respective football pyramids. The men’s side, who FGR will be familiar with from the clubs VNL encounters, face Hollywood backed Wrexham this weekend.
Looking Further Ahead
FGR next face Marine Academy Plymouth (13/02) in the last of their 4 successive away matches before FGR return to Chalford for a home match on Sunday 20 February when they host AFC St Austell Ladies at 2pm.
