Gateshead FC,

Neilson Rd,

Gateshead, Tyne & Wear,

NE10 0EF

Rovers longest away day will be a 538-mile round trip to Tyne and Wear when FGR face Gateshead.

The stadium is primarily an athletics stadium. It has a bowl-like effect, has a football pitch surrounded by an international standard athletics track.

Away fans are located in the large East Stand on one side of the stadium. This stand has a capacity of 4,000, more than ample for FGR and indeed most away followings in the National League. The stand is covered, free of supporting pillars and so fans have an unobstructed view of the playing action. The East Stand is well set back from the pitch, with eight lanes of the athletics track to contend with, before reaching the playing area. Plus, with the home fans located in the opposite Main Stand, the atmosphere can be limited.

At the end of the A1(M) Junction 65, take the A194(M) towards South Shields. At the end of the A194(M) take the A184 towards Gateshead. The stadium is situated three miles further along this road on the right-hand side.

Manager

Goalkeeper Rob Elliot began his career with Erith Town, before joining Charlton. Whilst at Charlton, he was sent out on loan to Bishops Stortford and Notts County, and also spent two loan spells at Accrington.

He would then go on to be Charlton’s first choice goalkeeper for several seasons, until he joined Newcastle on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2011. Signed mainly as a back-up to Tim Krul, he featured for the club sporadically, but became first choice in the 2015-16 season after Krul suffered a season-ending injury.

Through his father’s family, Elliot was eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland, and was first called up in 2013, making his debut the following year. He played 4 times for Ireland. Elliot retired from international football in 2017.

In June 2020 Elliot was released by Newcastle United after nine years. In January 2021, Elliot signed for Watford until the end of the 2020–21 season. In June 2021, Elliot signed a new 2-year contract with Watford.

On 11 August 2022, Elliot joined Gateshead as Technical Director. He was also registered as a first-team player

Following the departure of manager Mike Williamson to MK Dons, Elliot was appointed caretaker manager of Gateshead in October 2023.

He led Gateshead to a 6th place finish in the National League and to the 2024 FA Trophy Final, defeating Solihull on penalties to lift the trophy for the first time in the club’s history. On 20 June 2024, Elliot was appointed Gateshead manager on a permanent basis

Montgomery was substituted by Lewis Ward.

Club History

Gateshead won the 2024 FA Trophy.

There was a team formed in 1899 with the name South Shields Adelaide, which became a member of the Football League in 1919. Financial problems saw them move to Gateshead and change name, but the club got voted out of the Football League in 1960 and folded 13 years later. The South Shields club that was formed to replace the original also had to move to Gateshead, becoming Gateshead United in 1974 and then dissolving three years later. A new club, Gateshead Football Club, was formed in 1977 to replace Gateshead United, enjoying some small success during the early years thanks to the likes of making the first round of the FA Cup.

There was more success to come, such as in the 1982 1983 season when they won the Northern Premier League with a then record points tally of 100, scoring 114 goals as they did so. Over the years that followed, Gateshead bounced around the non-league divisions, finding their way into the National League. In 2019, Gateshead’s National League membership was suspended doer the financial issues, eventually being relegated to the National League North. They found their way back to the National League when they won the National League North in 2021 2022, following that up with a FA Trophy Final appearance the following season, losing to Halifax.

Last season saw a season of highs for the Heed recording their highest league finish in 10 years (sixth place) whilst also claiming their first FA Trophy on penalties against Solihull Moors. Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliott took charge of the squad leading them to Wembley and the play-offs – which his side never got to experience.Due to the local council failing to agree a 10-year lease on the stadium the EFL denied them the chance to claim a spot League Two meaning Elliott’s side were removed from play-off contention.
