Manager

Carl Magnay played as a defender. Born in Gateshead, Magnay joined Chelsea in 2007. After loan spells with Milton Keynes Dons and Northampton, he departed Chelsea and joined his hometown club Gateshead After three seasons with Gateshead, he spent one season with Grimsby where he won the club’s Player of the Season award. In 2015, he joined Hartlepool Magnay became club captain in his third season with Hartlepool before departing at the end of his fourth season. He subsequently joined non-League Spennymoor in 2019. After three seasons with Spennymoor, he re-joined Gateshead. In this spell, Gateshead earned promotion from the NL North as champions. He retired in 2023. Magnay also represented Northern Ireland at U21 level, earning one cap.
Following his retirement from football on 28 November 2023, he remained at Gateshead as a part of the coaching staff. On 14 June 2024, Magnay joined his former manager Mike Williamson as a first-team coach at League Two club MK Dons On 19 September 2024, Magnay once again followed Williamson, joining the coaching staff of Carlisle. In October 2024, Magnay took up his first managerial role when he was appointed manager at Gateshead following Rob Elliott’s departure to manage Crawley. After winning every league game in December 2024, Magnay won the league’s Manager of the Month award.
Rob Elliott left Gateshead to become Crawley manager replacing ex-FGR assistant manager Scott Lindsey (FGR – 2016-21 under Mark Cooper including promotion to EFL) who had left to become manager of MK Dons. Sadly in March 2025 both were sacked from their new jobs. Happily Scott Lindsey was then re-appointed manager of Crawley. Jamie Day (FGR assistant manager 2015-16 under Adrian Pennock) who had been Lindsey’s assistant at Swindon, Crawley & MK Dons remained at MK Dons.

Luke made a big impact on his return to Gateshead playing 50 times in all competitions last season and ending the season as Gateshead’s second top scorer with 11 goals and 4 assists.
Rovers Connection

James Montgomery had 5 spells at Gateshead. He finished his career there retiring in July 24. Montgomery played 18 times for FGR. Montgomery signed a two-year contract with FGR in May 2018. He made his debut on 14 August 2018, in the EFL Cup.
During a match against Mansfield in January 2019, Montgomery collided with opposition player Gethin Jones, resulting in a cut lip and lost teeth. Montgomery was replaced by Lewis Ward.

Club History

There was a team formed in 1899 with the name South Shields Adelaide, which became a member of the Football League in 1919. Financial problems saw them move to Gateshead and change name, but the club got voted out of the Football League in 1960 and folded 13 years later. The South Shields club that was formed to replace the original also had to move to Gateshead, becoming Gateshead United in 1974 and then dissolving three years later. A new club, Gateshead Football Club, was formed in 1977 to replace Gateshead United, enjoying some small success during the early years thanks to the likes of making the first round of the FA Cup.
There was more success to come, such as in the 1982 1983 season when they won the Northern Premier League with a then record points tally of 100, scoring 114 goals as they did so. Over the years that followed, Gateshead bounced around the non-league divisions, finding their way into the National League. In 2019, Gateshead’s National League membership was suspended doer the financial issues, eventually being relegated to the National League North. They found their way back to the National League when they won the National League North in 2021 2022, following that up with a FA Trophy Final appearance the following season, losing to Halifax.
Last season saw a season of highs for the Heed recording their highest league finish in 10 years (sixth place) whilst also claiming their first FA Trophy on penalties against Solihull Moors. Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliott took charge of the squad leading them to Wembley and the play-offs – which his side never got to experience. Due to the local council failing to agree a 10-year lease on the stadium the EFL denied them the chance to claim a spot League Two meaning Elliott’s side were removed from play-off contention.
March 2025 – Former Nigeria international footballer Victor Anichebe, who played for Sunderland, Everton & WBA, is rumoured to be fronting a consortium who are in the process of taking over Gateshead.
