Club History

The Football Association acknowledges that York Road is the oldest continuously used senior association football ground by the same club anywhere in the world. That is because Maidenhead United have called the stadium their home since the club’s formation, with a blue plaque placed just inside the home turnstiles to commemorate the fact. It began life in 1870 as the home of Maidenhead Cricket Club, with the first football match being played in February of the following year.
Maidenhead United was formed in the October of 1870 in order to give the members of the cricket club something to do in the winter months to keep them fit. The club’s first game was played in December when they took on Windsor Home Park at Bond’s Meadow.
Being such an old club, Maidenhead United also have the claim to fame that they were one of the 15 teams that played in the inaugural version of the FA Cup. Maidenhead were knocked out of the inaugural FA Cup 3-0 by Crystal Palace (the world’s oldest professional football Club). Maidenhead reached the competition’s quarter-final stage three times during the 1870s.
In 1894 they were one of the founder members of the Southern League, playing in numerous lower league competitions in the years that followed. In 2016/17 Maidenhead won the National League South, earning promotion to the National League.
In July 2024 Max Kilman was sold by Wolves to West Ham for £40 million. Max had been a Maidenhead player (34 appearances) until 2018 and a sell on clause means that Maidenhead will receive possibly the largest transfer fee, £4 million, ever received by a non-league club.
The Maidenhead Mascot is Yorky the Magpie.
