FGR Players of the Season
More than 900 votes were cast in the polls. 18 members of the 1st team squad attracted votes for Player of the Season and there were votes for every single one of the nominees for the Young Player of the Season (aged 21 or under). FGR fans clearly appreciate their squad!
Fans have voted for their FGR Player of the Season and Jamille Matt is their choice. Jamille arrived at Rovers last summer and has been dubbed one of the 5 best League 2 signings of the season. He has had one of his best seasons ever with an amazing 16 league goals (plus 1 play-off goal), even though injury curtailed the latter part of his season. Jamille made the shortlist of 3 for the EFL League 2 Player of the Season (together with Paul Mullin and Wes Houlahan of Cambridge Utd). Even though the phenomenal goal-scoring record of Mullin won out, Jamille’s nomination was recognition of the effect he has had on Rovers. FGR fans clearly recognised this – one third of the votes were for Jamille.
The runner-up in the poll, not surprisingly, is captain Chris Stokes. Chris’s first spell at FGR included 133 appearances between 2010 and 2015. He re-joined the club in January 2020 and agreed a new one year contract in June 2020. It turned out to be a shrewd signing. Chris has been the bedrock of the Rovers defence all season and, clearly, the favourite of many fans.
Coming 3rd in the poll was defender Dom Bernard with over 10% of the fans votes. Dom signed a contract extension in March this year that keeps him at the club until 2022 – a fact that will clearly please a lot of FGR fans. Dom’s eye-catching way of wearing his shorts would have been missed!
FGR Young Player of the Season
The fans choice for FGR Young Player of the Season was a resounding one! Udoka Godwin-Malife captured almost 40% of fans votes. 20-year old Dokes has had a fabulous season and his athleticism and pass completion rate out of defence have seen him develop into one of the league’s best young defenders. FGR fans clearly appreciate emerging quality when they see it!
Dokes accepting his magnum!
Runner-up in the poll for Young Player was Kane Wilson. Wing back Kane was signed on a 2 year contract last summer from West Brom and has demonstrated his quality this season with his willingness and ability to beat players on either flank. FGR fans clearly enjoyed watching him!
A very well deserved 3rd place in the poll for Young Player went to Odin Bailey. Odin is effectively in his second spell on loan from Championship side Birmingham after the 1st spell was cut short by an ankle injury. It may be that Rovers fans are hoping Birmingham don’t notice how much Odin is improving!
